Fab.Future Ruhr on the Road: Insights from Dutch Design Week

Fab.Future Ruhr unterwegs: Einblicke in die Dutch Design Week

How do new ideas emerge, and what does it take to turn creative approaches into concrete solutions? We explored these questions as part of the Fab.Future Ruhr project during our visit to Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. Funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Union, the project aims to strengthen innovation in the Ruhr region by connecting academia, makerspaces, and the creative industries. Amid innovative design, new materials, and creative workspaces, we gathered a wealth of insights that open up new perspectives on our work at the FabLab.

Our visit began with the “Rethinking” exhibition, which invited us to question existing approaches and discover new design possibilities. We then moved on to Sectie-C, a former industrial site that has evolved into a creative hub for designers, artists, and craftspeople. Amid workshops, studios, and exhibition spaces, we were able to discover different design approaches and experience how creativity, craftsmanship, and experimentation work together. At the Klokgebouw, too, we were treated to a wide range of insights into current design projects and innovative ideas. At Piet Hein Eek, the focus was on the combination of industrial architecture, artisanal craftsmanship, and extraordinary furniture design. Finally, we visited the Philips Museum and gained insights into the company’s history and technical innovations.

What connects the various stations is the opportunity to rethink things and bring ideas to life in a hands-on way. It is precisely this approach that also plays an important role for Fab.Future Ruhr. The project strengthens the network between science, FabLabs, makerspaces, and the cultural and creative industries to generate new momentum for innovation in the Ruhr region.

For us, the visit was therefore more than just a glimpse into current design trends. It demonstrated how important open spaces are for creative work, interdisciplinary exchange, and the collaborative development of new ideas. These spaces create opportunities to bring together different perspectives, try out new things, and further develop ideas. We’re taking the impressions from Eindhoven with us as inspiration for our continued work at the FabLab. After all, our work is also about bringing people together, enabling experimentation, and transforming ideas step by step into tangible solutions.
