Another visit from South Korea
Last week, we once again had visitors from South Korea. Prof. Yongin Kim from Chungbuk University, who has visited our FabLab several times before, was accompanied this time by Jiwon, the director of Chungbuk University’s makerspace. In light of a new funded project led by Prof. Yongin Kim, we discussed potential collaborations, presented projects from both makerspaces, and exchanged experiences.
Since Prof. Yongin Kim’s field of expertise is in astronomy and astrophysics, he gave us a presentation providing insights into a scientific project that also utilizes an ODMR setup. It was particularly exciting for our team members from the Quantum Minilabs project to see how our colleagues from South Korea are working with this technology, since ODMR experiments are also possible in our project. In return, we presented the projects we’re currently working on and showed off our latest lab equipment. We also gave the visitors a tour of the FabLab and then took them to our neighboring lab, the CDEL. There, our colleagues demonstrated how they, for example, disassemble screwdrivers to recycle the individual components back into the circular value chain.
The visit was a great opportunity to revive the friendship between FabLab and Makerspace and to hear about what the makerspace is currently working on.
Although Prof. Yongin Kim has visited us in Bottrop on several occasions, we also visited the Makerspace at Chungbuk University in South Korea back in 2024. A small group presented our Quantum Minilab kits and through our partner OpenUC2, the Makerspace purchased the products and is using them in their daily work. As soon as the Minilab kits are ready to ship, the university would also like to purchase and use the new kits. It is, of course, a special honor for us to see that our work is appreciated even in South Korea.
