Fab.Future Ruhr Visits the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz
As part of the Fab.Future Ruhr project, we travelled to Linz to visit the Ars Electronica Festival. Together with the RUB-Makerspace and the Kulturforum Witten, we spent several days exploring exciting projects and gaining new insights into technology, art, maker culture and the future.
The Ars Electronica Festival is a place where many different fields come together. Everywhere we looked, there were installations, projects and ideas that used technology in creative and sometimes surprising ways. As a FabLab, we were particularly interested in seeing how others use digital technologies and how these technologies can create new forms of art, interaction and collaboration.
It was not just about looking at finished projects. The many conversations and opportunities to exchange ideas with people working in similar fields were especially valuable. Travelling together with the people from Fab.Future Ruhr, the RUB-Makerspace and the Kulturforum Witten also gave us the opportunity to share our own experiences and take away new ideas.
Visiting the Grand Garage
Ein besonderes Highlight abseits des Festivals war für uns der Besuch der Grand Garage in der Linzer Tabakfabrik. Der MakerSpace bietet eine beeindruckende Auswahl an Werkstätten und Maschinen, von digitaler Fertigung und 3D Druck bis hin zu weiteren Bereichen des kreativen Arbeitens. Bei einer Führung konnten wir einen Blick hinter die Kulissen werfen und sehen, wie dort Menschen ihre Ideen entwickeln und praktisch umsetzen. Für uns war natürlich besonders interessant, welche Parallelen es zu unserer Arbeit im HRW FabLab gibt und wo die Grand Garage vielleicht ganz andere Wege geht. Der Besuch hat einige spannende Anregungen geliefert und gezeigt, wie unterschiedlich MakerSpaces organisiert sein können.
And of course: the Tabakfabrik
In addition to visiting the Grand Garage, we also had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the historic Tabakfabrik Linz. The combination of its industrial architecture and its current use as a place for creative industries and innovation made for an interesting contrast.
Lots of impressions and new ideas
Die Tage in Linz waren für uns eine tolle Gelegenheit, über den eigenen Tellerrand zu schauen. Das Ars Electronica Festival hat uns neue Projekte und Perspektiven gezeigt, die Grand Garage spannende Einblicke in die Maker Kultur gegeben und vor allem der gemeinsame Austausch im Rahmen von Fab.Future Ruhr viele neue Impulse gebracht. Wir sind mit vielen Eindrücken zurück ins Ruhrgebiet gefahren und sicher auch mit der einen oder anderen Idee, die wir in Zukunft im HRW FabLab ausprobieren möchten.
